Do you remember that post where we said OMG tihs is teh most exspensive car evar! Well looks like there’s a new one. It’s an example of probably the most significant piece of German racing history though, so it’s fair game. It’s a fully restored 1938 Auto Union D-Type. Read more after the jump.


One of Germany’s Silver Arrows, the D-Type was reportedly Hitler’s favorite. The cars dominated competitive racing during the thirties, but with the outbreak of war, racing ground to a halt. Many believed that the Soviets kept a load but it turns out they just burnt them or something. There are only three remaining.
It’s well within shooting distance of the $12.2 million record set by the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa at the RM Auction in Maranello only a couple of weeks ago, when it goes to auction. A worthier purchase, I’d say.
